さて、沖縄では日本一早い春を迎えました。
皆さんは、3月の沖縄と聞いて何を思い浮かべますか？
「まだ海には早いのでは？」
なんて思ったらもったいない！
実はこの時期の沖縄は、他では味わえない贅沢が詰まった「通」なシーズンの幕開けなのです。
1. 日本一早い「海開き」と「つつじ祭り」
3月下旬になると、沖縄各地のビーチでは続々と海開きが行われます。
2026年も22日前後には夏がスタート。
まだ少し肌寒い日もありますが、キラキラ光る水面を見ると
「今年も来たな！」
と気分が上がります。
また、東村では「東村つつじ祭り」が開催中です。
約5万本のつつじが山を彩る景色は圧巻。
運が良ければ、やんばるの豊かな森の中でリュウキュウイノシシの親子に出会える……なんていう、野生の生命を感じるサプライズがあるかもしれません。
（自慢ですが、私はリュウキュウイノシシの親子と出くわし、沖縄の地元の人々も見る機会が少ないヤンバルクイナも見ました。エヘン！）
2. 秘密にしたいキラーフレーズ――沖縄の「和そば」
そして、今回の旅で絶対に外せないのが大宜味村の「和そば」です。
「えっ、和そば？ それも沖縄そばでしょ？」
と思うかもしれませんが、「日本蕎麦」ですよ！
日本蕎麦！
実はここ大宜味村は、知る人ぞ知る蕎麦の名所。
秋に収穫する本土とは違い、沖縄の太陽を浴びて1月〜3月に収穫される「日本一早い新そば」が味わえるのです。
この時期だけの「新そば」は、香りが驚くほど高く、喉越しも抜群。
沖縄という地で、あえて日本そばの瑞々しさを愉しむ……。
これこそ、旅慣れた大人だけが知っている究極の贅沢だと思いませんか？
3. 海と川の境目で、命の洗濯を
お腹を満たした後は、慶佐次川（げさしがわ）のマングローブ林へ。
海と川の境目に立つと、山からの恵みが海へと注ぐ自然のエネルギーを感じられます。
（夜このエリアに来ると、天の川が見えることもありますよ）
3月の沖縄は、五感が喜ぶ驚きに満ちています。
一足早い春の香りと、ここでしか出会えない「和そば」を求めて、やんばるへ出かけてみませんか？
個人的には、沖縄ではめったに食べられない「和そば」がオススメです。
50枚ぐらい食べてしまいましょう！（笑）

Spring Has Sprung in Okinawa! Experience Japan’s Earliest Spring
Okinawa has officially welcomed the earliest spring in Japan!
When you think of Okinawa in March, what comes to mind?
If you’re thinking, “Isn’t it a bit too early for the beach?”—think again!
This is actually the start of the “insider” season, packed with luxuries you won’t find at any other time of year.
1. Japan’s Earliest Beach Openings & The Azalea Festival
Starting in late March, beaches across Okinawa begin their official opening ceremonies.
For 2026, summer kicks off around the 22nd!
While the breeze can still be a bit crisp, seeing the sun sparkling on the turquoise water is enough to get anyone’s heart racing.
Meanwhile, in Higashi Village, the Azalea Festival is in full swing.
The sight of 50,000 azaleas painting the mountainside is breathtaking.
If you’re lucky, you might even have a surprise encounter with a family of Ryukyu wild boars in the lush “Yanbaru” forest.
(Not to brag, but I’ve personally run into a family of those wild boars, and I’ve even spotted the elusive Okinawa Rail—a rare bird that even locals hardly ever see. Lucky me!)
2. My Secret “Killer Phrase”: Authentic Japanese Soba in Okinawa
Now, here is something you absolutely cannot miss: the “Wa-Soba” (authentic Japanese buckwheat noodles) in Ogimi Village.
You might be thinking, “Wait, don’t you mean Okinawa Soba?” No, I mean “Nihon-Soba,” real-deal Japanese Buckwheat Soba!
Ogimi Village is a hidden gem for soba connoisseurs.
Unlike mainland Japan, where buckwheat is harvested in autumn, Okinawa’s warm sun allows for “Japan’s Earliest New Soba,” harvested between January and March.
This seasonal “Shin-Soba” has an incredibly rich aroma and a perfectly smooth texture.
Enjoying the freshness of authentic Japanese soba in the heart of Okinawa… don’t you think that’s the ultimate sophisticated travel luxury?
3. Refresh Your Soul Where the River Meets the Sea
After filling your stomach, head over to the mangrove forests of the Gesashi River.
Standing at the threshold where the river meets the ocean, you can feel the raw energy of nature’s bounty flowing from the mountains to the sea.
(If you visit this area at night, you might even be treated to a spectacular view of the Milky Way!)
March in Okinawa is full of surprises that delight all five senses.
Why not head out to Yanbaru in search of the early scent of spring and the one-of-a-kind “Wa-Soba”? Personally, the soba is my top recommendation—it’s a rare treat you’ll almost never find elsewhere in Okinawa, and it’s so good, you’ll find yourself ordering plate after plate!
I’d say go for 50 servings! (Haha!)
