2026年がスタートして早くも1ヶ月。
節分ももう終わり、鬼は追い出せましたね。
ところで、2月の沖縄は、実は1年の中でも「お楽しみ」がギュッと詰まった穴場のシーズンなんです。
今回は、2月に沖縄を訪れるなら絶対にチェックしておきたい行事や見どころをご紹介します！
まずは、日本一早いお花見「桜まつり」ですね。
沖縄の桜は、本州のソメイヨシノとは違う、濃いピンク色が特徴の「寒緋桜（カンヒザクラ）」という品種の桜です。
2月上旬から中旬にかけて、各地で見頃を迎えます。
この桜が咲くころは、沖縄は「春の始まり」とも言えるほど暖かくなり始めるんです。
「桜」と言えば「春」。
品種は違えど、この点は本州も沖縄も共通していて、不思議に思えませんか？
沖縄では桜関連で2つのイベントが有名です。
今帰仁グスク（なきじんぐすく）桜まつり：世界遺産の城跡がライトアップされ、幻想的な夜桜が楽しめます（2月8日まで）。
那覇美らさくらまつり（ちゅらさくら）：2月21日と22日に漫湖公園で開催。
屋台やステージもあり、地元の活気を感じられますよ。
2月の沖縄といえば、やっぱりプロ野球キャンプ！
2月1日から県内各地の球場で一斉にスタートし、日本ハムや阪神、中日など多くの球団が沖縄で汗を流します。
ここで少し不思議に思う方もいるかもしれません――「沖縄には熱狂的な広島カープファンがけっこういるのに、なぜカープの選手たちはこのキャンプに来ないんだろう……？」
これは、カープ独自の伝統的なスケジュールに理由があるんです。
広島カープは例年、キャンプの前半を宮崎県で行い、後半から沖縄へ移動してくる「2ヶ所開催」というスタイルを貫いています。
2月14日頃に沖縄市（コザ）へやってくると、街中が待ってましたと言わんばかりにカープの「赤」一色に染まります！
地元の人たちから「自分たちの街のチーム」として愛され、商店街が真っ赤なフラッグで埋め尽くされる光景は、2月の沖縄ならではの熱い風物詩です。
そして、2月21日と22日には、読谷村で県内最大級の陶器市「読谷やちむん市」が開催されます。
職人さんたちが手掛けた温かみのある「やちむん（焼き物）」が、通常よりお得に手に入ることも！
お気に入りの一枚を探す宝探しのような気分になれますよ。
2月の沖縄は桜のピンクに、カープの赤、そして球場の芝生の緑と、色彩豊かで活気に満ちあふれています。
「海にはまだ早いかな？」と思っている方にこそ、この時期にしか味わえない文化やスポーツの熱気を体験してほしいと思います。

It’s 2026, and we’re already one month in! Setsubun is over, so hopefully, you managed to scare those “oni” (ogres) away!
By the way, did you know that February is the “hidden gem” season in Okinawa?
It’s packed with unique events you won’t find any other time of year.
If you’re planning a trip this month, here are the must-see highlights!
Japan’s Earliest Cherry Blossoms
First up is the Cherry Blossom Festival—the earliest in Japan.
Unlike the pale Somei Yoshino petals you see on the mainland, Okinawa’s stars are Kanhi-Sakura.
They are famous for their vibrant, deep pink color and usually peak from early to mid-February.
When these flowers bloom, it marks the beginning of spring in Okinawa as the weather starts to warm up.
Isn’t it interesting how “cherry blossoms” mean “spring” both here and on the mainland, even if the species are different?
There are two major events you shouldn’t miss:
Nakijin Gusuku Cherry Blossom Festival: Enjoy the magical sight of illuminated night blossoms at this World Heritage Castle site (running until February 8th).
Naha Chura-Sakura Festival: Held at Manko Park on February 21st and 22nd.
With food stalls and stage performances, you can really feel the local energy!
Pro Baseball Spring Training & the “Red” Mystery
February in Okinawa means one thing: Baseball Spring Training. Starting February 1st, teams like the Nippon-Ham Fighters, Hanshin Tigers, and Chunichi Dragons hit the fields across the island.
However, you might notice something curious: “Okinawa has so many die-hard Hiroshima Carp fans, so why aren’t the players here at the start of February?”
The secret is the Carp’s unique tradition.
They split their camp into two locations—starting in Miyazaki Prefecture and moving to Okinawa for the second half. Around February 14th, they finally arrive in Okinawa City (Koza), and the whole town turns into “Carp Red” to welcome them!
Seeing the shopping districts covered in red flags is a passionate February tradition unique to Okinawa.
Treasure Hunting at the Yachimun Market
On February 21st and 22nd, the Yomitan Yachimun Market—one of the largest pottery markets in the prefecture—takes place in Yomitan Village. You can find warm, handcrafted yachimun (traditional Okinawan pottery) at great prices. It feels just like a treasure hunt for that perfect piece!

February in Okinawa is a burst of color: the pink of the cherry blossoms, the red of the Carp fans, and the lush green of the baseball diamonds.
If you’re thinking, “Isn’t it too early for the beach?”—that’s exactly why you should come here! It’s the best time to soak up the culture and the sports fever that you can’t experience at any other time.
